South Africa: 3 Things That Left an Impression

Over the past few weeks, I visited two ports in South Africa: Durban (East Coast) and Saldanha Bay (West Coast). Both are unique yet share striking similarities. Here are my key takeaways:
1. Diversity in the Maritime Workforce
South Africa has one of the most diverse maritime industries I’ve seen. Women work as pilots, stevedores, tugboat captains, VTS operators, and more—making up around 50% of the workforce. Remarkably, this isn't just talk; it's reality. While many companies worldwide publicise their intentions to embrace diversity, South Africa simply gets it done. ( And if someone locals can explain HOW, please share in a comment)
2. Sharp Contrasts in Living Standards
South Africa is a country of extremes. On one side, you'll find first-class restaurants, thrilling water activities, and vibrant shopping malls with luxury boutiques. Yet, just over the wall—often guarded by armed security—extreme poverty where people are living in the cartoon boxes.
3.Volatile weather and incredible Nature
If you think that weather in North Europe is changeable , South Africa will surprise you. From N wind 50 kn to S wind 50 kn - only 20 minutes. From thunderstorm to desert hot - only one hour.
Anyway, the nature is incredible. Each time I visit the South African coast, I enjoy watching whales jump from the water. The natural beauty of this country is something special, even with its challenges. I hope one day I’ll have more free time to explore its inland oases.
safety tips for DURBAN:
- Stowaways: This is a well-known and growing issue in the port. The area lacks proper security, and stowaways can board your ship quickly, even climbing up mooring ropes within seconds. Hiring a security company is essential.
- Personal Safety: Never walk around after sunset. Even during the day, it’s safer to use a taxi to travel between the gangway and your destination. Walking can be extremely risky and could cost you more than just a shore leave. Stay safe.
